Dhaka, June 13 (UNB) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday in Parliament said that directives have been given to the law enforcing agencies to bring under the Speedy Trial Act the persons who will try to create anarchy in the name of political programmes.
Replying to a tabled question of Fazilatun Nesa Bappi (Women Seat-47) during the PM’s question-answer session, Hasina said that security measurers have been beefed up to avert any unwarranted incidents in the streets during the opposition-sponsored strike.
She mentioned that preventive measurers have also been taken to prevent unwarranted incidents in the future.
In this regard, the Prime Minister said that in the recent times, some untoward incidents have occurred during the hartal time.
She said that a number of 59 cases have been filed across the country against the people who were involved in the occurrence of such untoward incidents.
Hasina said the number of arrested persons is 304 in these 59 cases while trial is continuing in 18 cases and inquiry continues in 41 cases.
She also said that because of hartals, 79 vehicles have been set ablaze or damaged, while some five persons were killed and 83 others injured.
Answering another question of Shamsul Huq Chowdhury (Chittagong-11), the Prime Minister said that the government has taken various steps to increase the production of food-grains.
She mentioned that food-grains production was 3.22 crore metric tons in 2008-09 fiscal, 3.32 crore metric tons in 2009-10 fiscal and 3.45 crore metric tons in 2010-11 fiscal. “These are the highest so far,” she said.
She also said that the country has achieved self-sufficiency in terms of rice and for that reason there is no need to import rice this year.
Replying to a question of independent lawmaker Fazlul Azim (Noakhali-6), Hasina said that the government is already active to maintain the prices of essentials at tolerable level during the holy month of Ramadan as well as for smooth supply of the essentials.
“Monitoring is being strengthened so that the dishonest profit-takers could not increase the prices of essentials during the Ramadan by creating artificial crisis,” she said.
