Dhaka, June 13 (UNB) - After coming from two goals behind Usha Krira Chakra clinched the Walton Club Cup Hockey crown beating crowd pulling Abahani Limited by 3-2 goals in a keenly-contested final at the Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium here today (Wednesday).
The sky-yellow popular Dhanmondi outfit Abahani Limited displayed a superb performance during the first half and clearly dominated the half by 2-0 goals.
Usha KC reorganized themselves in the 2nd half and scored three goals in a row to win the match by 3-2 goals amid frustration of Abahani fans.
State Minister for Youth and Sports M Ahad Ali Sarkar witnessed the day’s final as chief guest and later distributed the prizes.
First Senior Deputy Director and Head of the Games and Sports of the meet’s sponsor Walton FM Iqbal Bin Anwar and Adviser (Program) of ATN Bangla Noajesh Ali Khan were the special guests on the occasion.
Champions Usha KC received prize money of Tk 50,000, runners-up Abahani Limited got Tk 30,000 as prize money while Dhaka Mariner Youngs Club received fair play trophy as the most disciplined team.
National player cum penalty corner specialist Mamunur Rahman Chayan of Mohammedan SC received the highest scorer award scoring 19 goals while Sarwar Hossain of Usha KC was adjudged the best player of the tournament. Both the players have received 21” colour TV from Walton.
In the day’s final, Pakistani recruit Alim Billah put Abahani ahead in the 17th minute from a penalty corner (1-0) while another Pakistani Mohammad Mudassar doubled the lead in the very next minute by a field goal (2-0).
After the breather, the old Dhaka outfit regained their form and reduced the margin in the 42nd minute by a field goal scored by Mohammad Imran
(2-1).
Selim Khaled of Usha KC leveled the margin just two minutes later scoring a field goal (2-2) while Ehsanullah Khan Rana scored the match-winning goal for Usha KC in the 55th minute from a penalty corner (3-2).
Earlier on Tuesday, Abahani Limited booked a seat for the final eliminating their traditional rival Mohammedan SC by 8-7 goals in the tiebreaker as the first semifinal between them ended 3-3 in the stipulated period.
In the other semifinal, Usha KC smartly reached the final crushing Sonali Bank by 9-2 goals at the same venue Tuesday afternoon.
