Dhaka, June 13 (UNB) - Parliament on Wednesday passed the International Crimes Tribunal (amendment) Bill-2012 paving the way for speeding up the trial of the war criminals through creating another bench.
Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shafique Ahmed moved the bill in the House that was passed by voice vote in the absence of opposition lawmakers.
The amended law will give legal effect to the ordinance promulgated earlier creating another bench for the trial of the war criminals who aided the occupation Pakistan forces to kill Bangladeshis and commit crimes against humanity in 1971.
Moving the bill, the Law Minister said the law would facilitate shifting of war crimes cases from one court to another for speedy disposal of the cases.
He rejected independent lawmaker Fazlul Azim’s proposal to create an apex court for shifting the cases from one court to another, but accepted one of Azim’s amendment proposal.
