Dhaka, June 14 (UNB) - Speakers at a post-budget review meeting on Thursday called for introducing a provision of formulating district-wise budget involving MPs to make budget more transparent and people-oriented.

MPs, political leaders, university teachers and civil society members raised their voices at a meeting titled “Post Budget Review Meeting for 2012-13 Fiscal” organised by Campaign for Good Governance, a civil society organisation, at the city’s Cirdap auditorium.

Speaking at the function as the chief guest, Prof. Dr MS Akbar MP said on the present budget preparing system, roles of MPs have been neglected as they are not directly involved with budget preparation.

“The MPs are only asked in the parliament to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to pass budget in parliament.”

Akbar, also chairman of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, said MPs should be given opportunities to put demands of people of their respective areas at parliamentary committees on different ministries to make budget more people-oriented.

Mahbub Ara Gini, another MP elected from Gaibanda-2 constituency, said the government has taken better economic policy and as a result the country has been able to continue increasing economic growth of over 6 percent despite global recession.

Communist Party leader Haider Akbar Khan Rono said the country is presently facing severe problems, including liquidity and inflation crises, as the government made an agreement with International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He emphasised involving the MPs in budget preparation to make it more effective and people-oriented.

Campaign for Good Governance chairperson Abdul Awal moderated the function, which was addressed, among others, by Agronomist Showkat Momen Shahjahan MP, M Fazle Rabbi Mia MP, Prof. M Ali Ashraf MP and Dhaka University teacher Rashed Al-Mahmud Titumir.
