Space shortage in Rangpur godowns hampers Irri, Boro procurement
Rangpur, June 15 (UNB)-The procurement target of Irri, Boro rice and paddy is unlikely to be achieved this season for lack of space in the food godowns in Rangpur region.
The Food Department officials said the Government had set a target to procure 2,89,190 mts of rice and 24,305 mts of paddy from the eight districts of Rangpur region during the current procurement season that began on May 3 and will continue until September 30.
But the procurement drive is being hampered for want of space in the food godowns as those have already been filled up with 2,63,082 mts of food grains, 20 mts excess of its preservation capacity.
The food officials said there are 89 food godowns in eight districts of the Rangpur division having storage capacity of about 2,44,150 mts of food grains.
The food warehouses have been overloaded due to bumper production in the last season, huge import of food in the current fiscal year and less distribution of food under social safety net programme, a source of food department said.
An official of Rangpur regional food office, however, said that lack of space in the food godowns would not hamper the procurement target adding that 6947 millers have signed agreement with the Department till now for the purpose and 19,500 mts of rice and 2,500 mts of paddy so far been procured in the region.
He said construction of 66 silos with preservation capacity of 51, 000 mts of food grains have already been completed in the first phase while construction of 32 godowns with storage capacity of 27,500 mts is underway in the second phase.
Department of Agriculture Extension officials said Boro was cultivated on
7,75,284 hectares of land with an output target of 30,88,569 mts of paddy in the region this season.
