Dhaka, June 16 (UNB) – Speakers at a human chain programme here on Saturday urged the government to immediately ratify the ILO Convention No. 189 for ensuring the rights of domestic workers.
ILO adopted the Convention titled ‘Decent Work for Domestic Workers’ on this day last year for ensuring decent works for domestic workers.
Marking this occasion, Domestic Workers Rights Network-Bangladesh (DWRN) formed the human chain in front of the National Press Club today (Saturday).
Rashed Khan Menon, MP, chairman of parliamentary standing committee on Education Ministry, attended the event as the chief guest.
Abdul Matin Master, president, Jatiya Sramik League,
Shahidulla Chowdhury, president of Bangladesh Trade Union Kendra, Abul Hossain, advisor of Garhosthyo Nari Sramik Union, among others, were present on the occasion.
A good number of national trade union leaders, representatives from NGOs and media also took part in the programme.
Addressing the occasion, the speakers also called for reforming the Labour Act-2006 to include the domestic workers under the protection of law.
International Domestic Workers Network designated June 16 as the International Day for Domestic Workers.
