
Pirojpur, June 17 (UNB)- An overloaded trawler capsized in Sapleza canal in Mothbaria upazila on Sunday morning.
Mothbaria uapzila fire brigade sources said the trawler, ‘Hasan Siam’, carrying over 30 passengers and 50 bags of cement sank in the canal at about 9:30 am while it was heading towards Masua from Sapleza Bazar.
However, all the passengers managed to swam ashore.
A unit of Mothbaria fire brigade reached the spot immediately but failed to salvage the capsized trawler due to strong currents in the canal and lack of sufficient equipment. A unit of Barisal fire brigade started for the spot.
Contacted, Mothbaria Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Zakir Hossain confirmed the incident.
Officer-in-Charge of Mothbaria thana Sheikh Md Abu Jahid told UNB that the trawler capsized as it was overloaded with cement.
