News - BNP to form ‘all-party action committees’ to intensify movement
Dhaka, June 17 (UNB) – The main opposition BNP will form all-party action committees in cities, towns and upazilas across the country to force the government to reinstate the caretaker government system to oversee the next general election.

“All-party action committees will be formed at divisional, metropolitan, district and thana levels to pile pressure on the government to restore the caretaker government system,” he said.

Fakhrul disclosed the party decision while addressing a demonstration in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office in the city on Sunday.

The BNP-led 18 party alliance organised the agitation as part of its countrywide demonstration programme declared by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia from June-11 rally to press home the alliance’s various demands, particularly the restoration of the non-party government system.

The agitation was also meant for other issues and demands like the release of the arrested top leaders of the opposition and return of the missing opposition leaders and workers, including M Ilias Ali, and protesting corruption, the worsening law and order situation and the soaring prices of agri-inputs.

Addressing the rally, Fakhrul said the ongoing movement has to be intensified to compel the government to meet the demand for holding the next parliamentary elections under a non-party government.

He alleged that the government has destroyed the country through its misrule in the last three and a half years.

“Nothing is moving …there’s stagnation everywhere. The law and order is on the downslide while the economy has been in bad shape. People have got fed up due to the misrule of the government. So, there’s no time to sit idle,” he warned.

Demanding immediate release of the detained opposition leaders, Fakhrul said the government would not be able to suppress the ongoing movement by resorting to arrest and oppression.

The BNP leader further alleged that the top opposition leaders were put behind bars in false cases as they waged a movement protesting the enforced disappearance of Ilias Ali.

Voicing concern over the government’s inaction to trace Ilias Ali, the BNP spokesperson said two months have elapsed since Ilias Ali went missing but the government was yet to trace him.

Ilias Ali, BNP organising secretary, disappeared along with his driver on the midnight of April 17.
