Dhaka, June 18 (UNB) - The Cabinet on Monday approved the draft of the ‘Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority Act, 2012’, aiming to increase the production and use of green energy in the country.
The approval was given at the regular weekly meeting of the cabinet held at Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said the use of renewable energy has increased across the globe instead of fossil fuel due to the adverse impacts of climate change.
He said the use of bio-gas and solar energy has also increased in recent years in Bangladesh and the cabinet approved the draft law to bring the use of renewable energy sources under a legal framework.
The cabinet secretary said it is a ‘Finance Bill’ and it will be placed in parliament after the President’s approval.
The cabinet also endorsed the proposal of signing of a bilateral agreement on air traffic between Bangladesh and Myanmar for renewing the agreement of 1977.
The Cabinet Secretary said the cabinet opined that bilateral connectivity as well as trade and commerce would be increased between the two countries with the signing of the agreement.
Under the proposed agreement, seven passenger and four cargo flights will be operated every week between the two countries. The agreement could be revised or rescinded after consultation between the two sides, he said.
Three Bangladeshi airline companies- Biman Bangladesh Airlines, GMG Airlines and United Airlines and two Myanmar Airliners- Myanmar Airways and Air Bagan Company Limited are authorised to operate the flights.
The cabinet was apprised of the participation of a Bangladesh delegation at the 68th annual meeting of the UNESCAP led by Finance Minister AMA Muhith in Bangkok on May 17-23 this year.
Another report on the participation of a Bangladesh delegation at the 9th session of the Islamic Conference of Information Ministers in Gabon’s capital Libreville on April 17-20 this year was also placed before the cabinet.
The cabinet members, advisers to the Prime Minister and State Ministers concerned attended the meeting were present.
