Dhaka, June 18 (UNB) – Some 72,000 buildings and 800 educational institutions in the capital may collapse if a 7-magnitude tremor on the Richter hits the city, LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam told Parliament on Monday.

 “Experts through Comprehensive Disaster Management Project (CDMP) under the Disaster Management Bureau have shown that a tremor of 7 magnitude raze to the ground 72,000 buildings and 800 educational institutions in the capital,” he said replying to a tabled question from Begum Faridunnahar Laily (Women seat-18).

The LGRD Minister said it is true that several lakhs of people are living in dilapidated buildings of Old Dhaka putting their lives at risk.

He informed the House that most of the risky buildings among the 442 identified risky ones are located at Old Dhaka. “Among the risky buildings, a good number of ones have been rebuilt after demolishing the old ones.”
