Dhaka, June 21 (UNB) – Industries Minister Dilip Barua on Thursday said the government has started the process of constituting the ‘Ship Breaking and Recycling Board’ to ensure environment-friendly ship-breaking industry in the country.

“Through this board, the red industry (ship-breaking) will be turned into green industry,” he said at an inter-ministerial meeting at the Shilpa Bhaban.

Barua said the key objective of the board is to expedite industrialization in the country through rapid development of environment-friendly ship breaking and recycling industry.

Representatives of the different stakeholders relating to the industry will be inducted in the board.

Additional Industries Secretary ABM Khorshed Alam, Bangladesh Steel and Engineering Corporation chairman M Ataur Rahman, Director General of the Department of Environment Monwar Islam, senior officials from the ministries of Home, Land, Shipping, Foreign Affairs, Planning Division, and Economic Relations Division, Department of Explosives, Bangladesh Accreditation Board, Labour Department and Bangladesh Ship Breakers Association were, among others, present in the meeting.

The meeting with Industries Minister Dilip Barua in the chair was arranged to give necessary directives for proper implementation of the Ship-Breaking and Ship-Recycling Rules-2011.  

The stakeholders in the meeting suggested some amendments in the Rules to help flourish green ship-breaking and recycling industry in the country.

They put emphasis on early formation of the Ship Breaking and Recycling Board for the betterment of the industry.

The meeting also decided to form a working committee to resolve the crisis, if any, while ensuring environment-friendly ship-breaking industry.
