Dhaka, June 22 (UNB) - BNP front-ranking leader Moudud Ahmed on Friday alleged that a quarter within the government is involved in a deep-rooted conspiracy to destroy the country’s largest foreign currency-earning garment sector.
“Awami League leaders are saying that an influential country is fanning the flame of violence in the readymade garment sector. So, why can’t you identify the conspirators? Because a section within the government is involved with the conspiracy,” he said.
Moudud came up with the allegation while addressing a discussion at the National Press Club. Bangladesh Nationalist Humanrights Forum (BNHF) organised the discussion titled ‘Violation of Constitution, Treason and Current Perspective’.
His remarks came apparently following the remarks of AL general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam that foreign country had a hand in the RMG violence.
In the wake of a weeklong labour unrest in RMG industrial belt Ashulia, Syed Ashraful recently had said an 'influential country' was instigating the labour unrest.
The senior BNP leader also urged the government to take stern action against the plotters after identifying them through investigation.
“If you fail to name the conspirators, it’ll prove that an influential section within the government is involved in the evil design to destroy the RMG sector,” he said.
Earlier, on Thursday, while exchanging views with reporters at a ‘Meet-the-Press’ programme at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir asked Ashraf to elaborate his remarks on the RMG sector.
When his attention was drawn to Ashraf’s comments, Fakhrul also said there might have a hand of any foreign country in the RMG sector unrest in this very competitive world market but his party does not have any specific information about that.
Mentioning the garment sector the lifeline of the country’s economy, he urged the government to act as a custodian to save it from ruination.
Chaired by BNHF president Rezaul Kabir Reza, the programme was addressed, among others, by BNP chairperson’s adviser Shamsuzzaman Dudu, former state minister for education ANM Ehsanul Haq Milon and city BNP Member Secretary Abdus Salam.
Moudud also slammed the AL general secretary for his comment that BNP will not be able to force the government to reinstate the caretaker government through movement, saying Ashraf sometimes makes unguarded remarks.
“Restore caretaker government. Otherwise, you know very well how BNP will realise the demand through a tougher movement,” the former minister said.
