News - BNP won’t share power with evil force: Fakhrul
Dhaka, June 23 (UNB) – BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said the 18-party alliance will not share power with any undemocratic force as it wants to return to power with people’s mandate.

“The 18-party alliance doesn’t want to share power with any undemocratic and unconstitutional third force. Instead, the alliance will come to power with people’s mandate through a fair election under a nonparty caretaker government,” he said while addressing an emergency meeting of Dhaka city leaders of the alliance at Bhasani auditorium.

Reacting to the remarks of State Minister for Law Quamrul Islam that BNP wanted to strangle democracy forever by facilitating the emergence of a third force, Fakhrul said his party never ever supported non-political and undemocratic third force, and would continue to do so in the future, too.

Quamrul came up with the allegation at a discussion at the National Press Club on Friday, a day after Fakhrul said his party would resist any "unconstitutional and non-political third force" if such a force emerges taking advantage of the present political standoff.

Addressing the meeting, the spokesperson for the main opposition said Awami League had welcomed undemocratic elements whenever they captured power unconstitutionally.

Referring to Fakhruddin-Moinuddin's ‘unconstitutional’ government, he said Sheikh Hasina had welcomed their illegal regime and claimed it was the outcome of her movement.

She had also announced to legitimise the activities of the unconstitutional government and did not take any action against them for their misdeeds after assuming power with their assistance, Fakhrul alleged.

The BNP acting secretary general said the government resorted to repression of the opposition leaders and activists and put hundreds behind bars filing false cases against them as it miserably failed to run the country.

He alleged that over 2,000-3,000 opposition leaders and activists were murdered and 30 others, including Ilias Ali and Chowdhury Alam, made disappeared across the country during the last three and a half years rule of the present government.

Fakhrul claimed that there was hardly any upazila in the country where opposition men were not tortured and sent to jails.

He alleged that the government pushed the country into chaos and uncertainty by annulling the caretaker government.

The BNP leader urged the government to immediately place a bill in parliament and restore the caretaker government system to bring back stability and peace in the country.

Chaired by Dhaka city BNP member secretary Abdus Salam, senior leaders of city 18-party alliance spoke at the meeting.
