News - Housewife burnt to death for dowry in Jessore
Benapole (Jessore), June 24 (UNB) – A housewife, who sustained burn injuries as her in-laws poured petrol on her body and set her on fire for dowry at Chakla village in Monirampur upazila of Jessore on May 23, died at her father’s house of the same village this (Sunday) morning.

The deceased was identified as Sima Khatun, 23, wife of Kabirul of the village.

Police said Kabirul along with his family members used to torture Sima for Tk 2 lakh as dowry.

On May 23, they picked up a quarrel with Sima as she refused to bring the dowry money from her parents. At one stage, they poured petrol on Sima’s body and set her afire, leaving her seriously injured.  

Sima was first admitted to Jessore Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka.

She was taken back to her father’s house from hospital few days ago. But while undergoing treatment she died in the morning.

Sima’s brother Shariful Islam filed a case against Kabirul and his family members on May 25 with Monirampur thana.

Kabirul and his family members went into hiding hearing the death news of Sima.
