News - Let’s play ‘election game’ to test popularity: Fakhrul
Dhaka, June 24 (UNB) – BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday invited the ruling Awami League to test its popularity in an ‘election game’ creating a level-playing field after restoring the caretaker government system.

“Why are you so scared of elections under a non-party caretaker government (CG)?…restore the CG system and create a level-playing field and then let’s play an ‘election game’ …let people see how many seats you can win,” he said while addressing a rally in front of BNP’s Nayaplatan central office.

As part of its countrywide programme, Dhaka City 18-Party Alliance orgainsed the rally protesting the tax burden imposed on people, reduction of subsidiary to agriculture, and loan-dependent ‘anti-people budget’ placed by the Finance Minister on June 7.

Fakhrul came up with the call reacting to the Prime Minister’s Saturday’s remarks that BNP will not get more that 10 seats in the next general election.

Addressing a discussion marking the 63rd founding anniversary of Awami League at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city, the premier reportedly said she did not know whether BNP will get 10 seats in the next polls.

Recalling Sheikh Hasina’s claim in 1991 at Kolkata airport that BNP would get 30 seats in parliamentary polls, Fakhrul said the fact is that BNP at that time had formed the government.

“Now they are saying that BNP won’t get more than 10 seats in the next general election. But, we’ll form the government this time, too with the support of people,” the BNP leader said.

He said his party doesn’t believe in distribution of seats before election as it will form the government with people’s trust and love wining the next election.

Fakhrul alleged that the government failed to fulfill people’s any aspiration and demand during its three and a half years rule, as they are busy amassing wealth through corruption.

“There’s hardly any sector or ministry where there is no corruption. Every minister and their APSs are now involved in corruption,” he told the rally.

Referring to the Tk 70 lakh Railwaygate scandal, Fakhrul, also an ex-junior minister, said Suranjit was made minister without portfolio relieving of the ministry only to legitimise (halal) his alleged malpractices.

He also alleged that 7,000 people were recruited to the ministry through corruption. “Each and every candidate had to count several lakhs of taka to get the job.”

Fakhrul said the government is destroying all the democratic institutions, economy, RMG sector and share market through its wrong decisions and policies.

He also slammed Finance Minister AMA Muhith for criticising the leading newspapers The Daily Star and Prothom Alo for publishing the names of the accused of corruption in the Padma bridge project.

Fakhrul said when the two papers write in their favour they are good when they write against them they are rubbish.  “The two newspapers that dictate all are immersed in character assassination,” the finance minister said on Saturday at a post-budget discussion organised by the Economic Reporters Forum at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital.

The Daily Star, the Prothom Alo and several other dailies last week published reports that Canadian company SNC-Lavalin had offered bribe to former Communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain and some other officials.

He alleged that the government abolished the caretaker government provision to cling to power until 2021 holding elections under their own arrangements.

The BNP leader urged the government to immediately place a bill in parliament and restore the caretaker government system. Otherwise, he warned, the government will be forced to reinstate the CG system through a harsher movement.

Chaired by Dhaka city BNP member secretary Abdus Salam, senior leaders of city unit 18-party alliance spoke at the rally.
