Khaleda returns home from S Arabia

Dhaka, June 25 (UNB) – BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia returned home early today (Monday) after a nine-day visit to Saudi Arabia.

A flight of Gulf Airlines carrying the BNP Chairperson reached Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 5:08 am, her media wing member Shamsuddin Dider told UNB.

Several hundred leaders and activists of the BNP and its front organisations, including party acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, received Khaleda Zia at the airport.

BNP Chairperson’s adviser Riaz Rahman, BNP vice-chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury, personal secretary Saleh Ahmed, press secretary Maruf Kamal Khan and party leader Sharif Shah Kamal Taj, among others, accompanied the opposition leader.

On Sunday, the opposition leader flied for Bahrain from Riyadh by a Gulf Air flight around 3:30 pm (Saudi time). Top officials of the Saudi government and expatriate BNP leaders saw her off at the Riyadh International Airport.

After a short stopover, she left Bahrain for home by another flight of the airlines at about 8:30 pm (Bahrain time).
 
Khaleda went to Saudi Arabia on June 15 at the invitation of the Saudi government for her medical treatment. She underwent health checkup at the King Faisal Specialised Hospital.

During her stay in Saudi Arabia, the BNP chief also performed holy Umrah and held meetings with Saudi high officials, including newly-appointed Crown Prince Salman bin Abdul Aziz, and Saudi king Abdullah’s Adviser Abdullah Omar Nasif, OIC Secretary General Dr Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu and Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Chairman Dr Ahmad Mohamed Ali.

Just a few hours before her departure, the opposition leader met Saudi Crown Prince Salman on Sunday and requested him to look into various problems, including non-issuance of work permit, facing by Bangladeshi workers in Saudi Arabia.

Responding to Khaleda’s request, the prince, the second powerful man of the Saudi government, assured her of taking up the matter with the authorities concerned for consideration.

As the opposition leader sought his cooperation in having increased investment, financial assistance and recruitment of Bangladesh workers, the Saudi Deputy Prime Minister also assured her of raising the issues with the authorities concerned for taking necessary steps.

Khaleda Zia invited the Prince to visit Bangladesh which he gladly accepted.

The BNP leaders who received Khaleda on her arrival at the airport included  Mirza Abbas, Nazrul Islam Khan, Abdullah Al Noman, Selima Rahman, Air Vice Marshal (retd) Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, Chowdhury Kamal Ibne Yusuf, Dr Osman Farruk, Zainul Abdin Farroque, Abdul Mannan, Barrister Shahjahan Omar, Dr Zahid Hossain, Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Amanullah Aman, Barkat Ullah Bulu, Fazlul Haque Milon, Khairul Kabir Khokon, Nazimuddin Alam, Abdus Salam, Harun-ur Rashid, MP, Eng Golam Mostafa, MP, Abul Latif Johnny , Shirin Sultana, Shahidul Islam Babul, Shafiul Bari Babu, Abul Kalam Azad and Shamsuddin Dider.
