News - HTC quits the Brazilian market

Geeky Gadgets Online

Well, you win some, you lose some. As it turns out, the Brazilian market is a loss for HTC and they are out due to high taxes, low market penetration and other factors.

HTC cancelled the planned launch of the One series of Android phones in Brazil, and now it has announced plans to pull out of the Brazilian market completely. They will keep a small force in the country to support current devices, but that is about it. HTC’s marketshare, at 0.11 percent, is lowest in the country, well behind Nokia, Samsung, Apple, Sony, LG, Motorola, RIM, and ZTE.

This is really too bad for HTC as Brazilians purchased almost 9 million smartphones last year, and will likely become the fourth largest cell phone market in the world by 2016. HTC only had a minor interest in the country in the past, with weak advertising and retail presence. It looks like they should have taken the country more seriously.
