Dhaka, June 25 (UNB) – The journalist community at a human chain in front of the National Press Club in the city on Monday declared ATN Bangla chairman Mahfuzur Rahman the ‘enemy of the media’.
He was also declared ‘persona non grata' for his derogatory remarks over the murder of journalist couple Sagar-Runi and stance against the journalist community.
Journalists from different media outlets, who formed the human chain protesting an attack on a journalist union leader by ATN Bangla newsmen on Sunday, demanded immediate arrest of Mahfuzur Rahman.
They urged the journalists and other eminent personalities not to participate in any talk-shows aired by ATN Bangla and ATN News.
The journalist leaders decided to cancel the membership of 10 journalists, found responsible for Sunday’s incident, from different forums, including Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU), Dhaka Journalists Union (DUJ), Press Club and Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ).
The are Joy-e-Mamun, Nadira Kiran, SM Babu, Manash Ghosh, Biplob, Bhanu Ranjan Chakravarty, Rahab Minhaj, Shakhawat Milton, Mahmudur Rahman of ATN Bangla and Shamim Ahmed of Bhorer Kagoj.
BFUJ president Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury declared a ‘March-towards-Prime Minister’s Office’ programme for tomorrow (Tuesday) from the human chain. He urged the journalists to join the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, eminent journalist ABM Musa said the journalist community got united following the murder of the journalist couple, but a conspiracy is going on to break the unity.
Former president of Jatiya Press Club Shawkat Mahmud said, “We’ll have to resist an attempt to foil the unity of journalists.”
News Today editor Riazuddin Ahmed said those who assaulted the journalist leader must be brought to book.
BFUJ presidents Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury and Ruhul Amin Gazi, secretary general Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan, acting secretary general M Abdullah, DUJ presidents Abdus Shahid and Omar Faruque, general secretaries Muhammad Baker Hossain and Shaban Mahmud, Jatiya Press Club president Kamal Uddin, general secretary Syed Abdal Ahmad, Dhaka Reporters Unity president Sakhawat Hossain and general secretary Sajjad Alam Khan were present.
DUJ leader Jahangir Alam was assaulted by ATN Bangla newsmen as he demanded the arrest of their chairman in connection with the killing of journalist couple Sagar-Runi during a human chain programme in front of the National Press Club on Sunday.
During his recent London tour, the ATN Bangla chief said, "Sagar and Runi had been the victims of an extramarital affair.” He also claimed that he had video footage relating to their killing.
Since then, journalists have been demanding legal action against the ATN Bangla Chairman.
