Dhaka, June 25 (UNB) – Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury on Monday in Parliament warned readymade garments workers, students and farmers that they would lose whatever facilities they are enjoying now if the BNP-Jamaat alliance returns to power.
“The RMG workers will have a tough life, students won’t get books in time and farmers won’t get the facilities that they’re enjoying now if BNP returns to power,” she said while taking part in the discussion on the proposed budget for next fiscal.
The Agriculture Minister also warned the farmers that if it returns to power, the “BNP-Jamaat alliance will scrap all the decisions that were taken by the present government.”
She mentioned that the present government has ensured minimum wages for the RMG workers at Tk 3,000, provided adequate subsidies for the farmers and distributed 23 crore new textbooks for the school students.
“BNP means darkness, militancy, terrorism and non-development… in a word, BNP means back gear,” she said.
Terming BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia as an illiterate person, Matia said: “I warn you (students) all, you won’t get books in time and the facilities you’re enjoying now.”
On the country’s economic growth, she said the GDP (gross domestic product) growth would be close to 7 percent in the outgoing fiscal although primarily it was estimated at 6.3 percent.
“According to the preliminary estimation, the GDP growth will be 6.3 percent while World Bank put it at 6.4 percent. But I hope it’ll be 7 percent or close to 7 percent after the final estimation.”
The veteran Awami League lawmaker said the government could keep the wheel of economy moving despite the economic volatility globally.
About the macro- and micro-economic indicators, she said Bangladesh is conservatively ahead of many countries in terms of economic growth.
She criticized those who underestimated the country’s growth rate.
Defending the government’s borrowings from the banking sector, Matia said the government is using the borrowed money for investment and in implementing a bigger ADP.
She said the BNP government had also borrowed money from the central bank and commercial banks.
On private sector credit growth, she said the government controlled the credit growth to the private sector for a while when it was escalating up. “There was a game behind it.”
The Agriculture Minister said the size of ADP (Annual Development Programme) has become double in the last three years. “We want a bigger budget in future. We’ll be able to achieve it.”
On investment scenario, she said the country received record Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in 2011.
Defending quick rental power plants, Matia said these plants have played important role in boosting agri production and keep the wheels of economy moving.
On the Padma Bridge project, she said the government would any how implement the project. “We won’t step back seeing anybody’s red eyes.”
