GENEVA, June 27 (AP/UNB) - International envoy Kofi Annan is summoning permanent members of the U.N. Security Council for a conference on Syria but has not invited Iran or Saudi Arabia, two of the biggest regional players.

Annan's announcement cited invitations to the five veto-wielding council members - Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States - plus Turkey. He also said the invitations included the U.N. secretary-general and representatives of the League of Arab States including diplomats from Iraq, Kuwait and Qatar.

The Saturday conference in Geneva aims at finding ways to stop the violence in Syria.
