Mumbai, June 29 (UNB) – Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid and five others from Bangladesh received the World Education Congress Global Award-2012 in India on Friday.
A number of distinguished personalities from across the world were also given the award at a function held at hotel Taj Land End, Mumbai in recognition of their outstanding contributions to education sector.
The five other Bangladeshi recipients are Dr Mohammad Sharif, Vice Chancellor of East West University, Prof Dr M Imtiaz Hossain, Vice Chancellor, Islamic University of Technology, Gazipur, Vice Chancellor of Dhaka International University Dr Nurul Momen, Chairman of Cambrian School and College MK Bashar and Managing Director of SSBCL Group Sumon Talukder.
The Education Minister was given the Award by the World Education Congress, which brings global personalities in education and academics under one roof, for his outstanding contributions to the education sector in Bangladesh.
Bashar received the award as the best entrepreneur in the education sector while Dr Momen and Sumon Talukder for their outstanding contributions to the sector.
Earlier in the morning, Nahid addressed the inaugural function of the two-day World Education Congress.
Bhutanese Education Minister Lyonpo Thakur Singh Powdyel and Namibian Deputy Education Minister Dr David Namwandi also spoke on the occasion.
Chairman of World Education Congress Ashok Venkatramani delivered his well-come address at the inaugural session.
The World Education Congress is aimed at encouraging collaboration and partnership among the institutions as well as providing exposure to important education tools, technologies and solutions.
Addressing the function, Nahid said the rights to education enshrined in the constitution are not enough. "It is now necessary to create and generate equal opportunities for all the citizens. Education means knowledge and skill and this should be used for the social economy.”
He said: “We have not yet achieved the goals we have been seeking since the country’s independence 40 years ago.”
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the Congress 2012, Nahid said: “In fact, I received the award on behalf of all of my colleagues in the Education Ministry as well as all the members of our education family and the countrymen."
