Khaleda terms govt internationally-recognised corrupt
She demands government's immediate resignation

Feni, July 1 (UNB) - Branding it as an ‘internationally-recognised corrupt regime’, opposition leader Khaleda Zia on Sunday demanded immediate resignation of the grand alliance government.
“This is a killer, looter, failed and corrupt government…they (govt) should quit forthwith if they have the minimum sense of shame,” Khaleda told a wayside rally at Fulgazi Bazar before distributing relief materials among the flood-affected people of the area.
The BNP chairperson reached Fulgazi from Chittagong at about 2:30 pm and spoke for nearly 20 minutes.
Khaleda said the ruling party before election had pledged to build the Padma Bridge. “But they couldn’t do it because of corruption.”
She said World Bank’s cancellation of IDA credit in support of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge project has internationally proved that the government is corrupt.
The former premier said not only WB but also other donor agencies would not provide any support as the government has lost their confidence for its corruption. “So, there’ll be no development in the country during the present government’s rule.”
She also urged people to save the country from the government that earned the ‘certificate’ for its corruption.
Turning to the journalist couple Sagar-Runi murder case, Khaleda Zia alleged that the government was involved in the killing of them. “Their killers couldn’t be held as they were killed by the government.”
She said the reason behind the murder of Sagar-Runi was government’s corruption. “They [Sagar-Runi] were killed as they detected the corruption of the government and wanted to expose that.”
Khaleda said this government has killed over 6,000 people since it has assumed office.
“People are being killed and kidnapped. There’s no security of public life and property in the country,” she said, adding: “Things cannot go on like this.”
About the Feni River, the opposition leader said, “As long as I’m alive, the water of this river won’t be allowed to divert to any other country in the name of any agreement as we did not get water from Teesta.”
Addressing the disaster-affected people, the BNP Chairperson said; “I’ve come here to stand beside you as per our capacity.”
She also criticised the government for not standing beside the flood-hit people of different districts. “The government didn’t stand beside the disaster-stricken people as they are not the government of the people. They‘re hardly worried about public sufferings.”
Describing a sorry state of electricity, the leader of the opposition said the government has looted crores of public money through corruption in the name of setting up quick rental power plants. “But the power situation didn’t improve at all.”
She claimed that had the steps and policies taken during the tenure of the past BNP government been implemented, there would have been no power crisis in the country.
The BNP chairperson said the country’s people are helpless and passing a hard time due to repressive acts being perpetrated by Awami League men. “The government could implement no election pledge in the last three and a half years but indulged in repression and looting.”
Reiterating her demand for restoring the caretaker government system, she said now it is not only a demand of BNP, but it has turned out to be a mass demand.
Khaleda also demanded the government create a level-playing field for holding a fair election and dissolution of parliament three months before the polls.
Later, the BNP chief distributed relief materials among the disaster-affected people at Parshuram Bazar in Parshuram upazila.
She also addressed a wayside rally there where Jatiya Party (Ershad) leader Shafiqul Alam Sarker along with over 100 other leaders and activists joined BNP presenting a bouquet to Khaleda.
The opposition leader also distributed relief goods among the flood-hit people in Chhagalnaiya upazila.
Earlier, in the morning, Khaleda Zia left the port city of Chittagong for Feni to visit the flood-affected areas of the district and distribute relief materials among the victims.
Prior to leaving the port city, she visited Akbar Shah Mazar area where scores of people were killed in a hill slide recently. She had been there at about 11:25 am and distributed relief goods among 300 family members of the victims.
Over a hundred people were killed and many others injured in the recent natural calamites, including hill slide, in Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban.
Besides, several lakhs of people in Chittagong and Feni remained marooned due to incessant rain for over a week and onrush of waters from hills.
Khaleda went to Chittagong on Saturday for visiting the disaster hit-areas and distributing relief goods among the victims of the port city. She stayed overnight in the port city.
