Abahani clinches BPL title after 2-2 draw with Muktijoddha SKC
Dhaka, July 3 (UNB) - Abahani Limited clinched the Grameenphone Bangladesh Premier League crown after making a 2-2 draw with Muktijoddha Sangsad KC at the Bangabandhu National Stadium here today (Tuesday).
This is the 4th professional league crown for Abahani Limited in the 5th version of the league.
With the day’s draw in the last league match, Abahani Limited emerged champions in the league securing 45 points while Muktijoddha Sangsad KC finished runners-up with 44 points.
In the day’s title deciding match, Abahani opened up the Muktijoddha defense in the 11th minute, but a volley of Ghanaian Awudu Ibrahim, off a Zahid Hossain cross, sailed over the crosspiece.
Muktijoddha SKC hit back in the 13th minute as their Nigerian forward Sunday Chizoba made a good attempt, off a through pass of Brazilian midfielder Lima, but Abahani custodian Zia saved his castle by punching the ball away at the cost of a corner.
However, Sunday Chizoba put Muktijoddha ahead in the 15th minute as he fired the net utilizing a back pass of Ariful off a corner of Lima (1-0).
In the 23rd minute, a free kick by Lima from the right flank traveled over the bar.
In the 41st minute, Abahani’s Ghanaian striker Awudu Ibrahim curved a free kick from the left flank but it narrowly went over the crosspiece.
As Abahani created strong pressure over Muktijoddha SKC, they got a good chance in the 68th minute, but defender Sujon’s shot from a goalmouth melee was saved by a Muktijoddha defender from goal line.
Abahani’s substitute forward Sakhawat Rony leveled the margin in the 70th minute tapping the ball home in his 2nd attempt after receiving a low cross from midfielder Zahid Hossain (1-1).
But, Sunday Chizoba again put Muktijoddha ahead in the 73rd minute by a placing shot, capitalizing on a Lima free kick (2-1).
Eventually, Zahid Hossain rescued Abahani as he scored the equalizer in the 84th minute by a 2nd header when his first attempt, off a Yoko Samnick long pass, came his way again deflecting Muktijoddha custodian Mostak (2-2)
