Dhaka, July 3 (UNB) - The overall flood situation in Sirajganj, Barguna and Sherpur worsened on Tuesday as the water level of the rivers in the districts continued to rise, displacing thousands of people.

However, the flood situation in Kurigram and Sylhet districts improved with the recession of floodwaters, triggering an outbreak of waterborne diseases.

Though the water level in the Brahmapurta and Dharla rivers decreased in Kurigram, some five lakh flood-hit people in nine upazilas are passing their days without emergency supplies.

In Sirajganj, erosion by the mighty Jamuna River turned severe, devouring over 500 houses in Sadar upazila in the last two days.

In Barguna, char and other areas outside cross-dam were inundated as the Paira, Baleshwar, Bishkhali and Khakdone rivers are in spate.

UNB Sherpur correspondent reports: Water level in the Old Brahmaputra River continued to swell inundating 15 villages in Sadar upazila and leaving over 200 families homeless.

UNB Sylhet correspondent says: The flood situation in the district improved as there was no rainfall in the last four days.

With the recession of floodwaters, various waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea have broken out in the district. About 250 people of 11 upazilas have so far been affected by diarrhoea.

Meanwhile, the government has allotted around Tk 51 lakh and other relief materials for the flood-affected people in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra, Sirajganj and Jamalpur districts.

Besides, 717 medical teams have been formed to provide healthcare services to the flood victims, said a handout.
