Mystery shrouds death of Navy officer`s housemaid

Chittagong, July 3 (UNB) - Mystery shrouded the death of a Navy officer`s housemaid whose body was recovered from a verandah of his house at Love Lane in the city`s Kotwali on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Aktari Begum, 32, wife of Mafizul Islam of Savar upazila of Dhaka district.

Mahiuddin Selim, Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Police Station said a team went to Abedin Colony flat of Lt. Commander Md Sharif after receiving a phone call from the Navy officer in the morning.

``Police recovered the body with an orna (scarf) wrapped around her neck, from a balcony of the flat``, he said.

The Navy officer`s family sources claimed that Aktari committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of the balcony sometime between Monday night and Tuesday early morning, the OC said.

He said the employers of the domestic assistant did not say the reason behind her suicide.

``As the circumstances did not mach their claims the whole things looked mysterious to police, he said, adding ``an investigation into the death will start shortly``.
