As flood water recedes waterborne diseases spread; 413 affected by diarrhea in Sylhet

Dhaka, July 4 (UNB) - As flood water is receding in flood-affected areas of 12 upazilas of Sylhet waterborne diseases are spreading there with more 163 diarrhea patients getting admission to different hospitals in the district to receive treatment in the last 24 hours, ending at 6 pm on Wednesday.

With this the total number of diarrhea patients stood at 413 since flood water started to recede on July 1 in the district. The deluge, triggered by incessant rains and onrush of water from upstream, started on June 17 and lasted for one week.

Earlier, 250 people were affected by diarrhea in 12 upazilas.

Meanwhile, flood situation in Kurigram, Jamalpur, Gaibandha and Bogra districts improved in the last 24 hours as water levels in major rivers dipped below the Red Mark.

Sylhet Civil Surgeon Dr Kamrul Hasan said around 1,080 oral-saline and 1,740 water purification tablets were distributed among the marooned people today.

Sylhet Water Development Board (WDB) sources said water level of Surma and Khusiara rivers were falling and the rivers flew below the danger mark at 6 am today.

District food and rehabilitation officer Rafiqul Islam estimated that over five lakh people were affected by the flood.

UNB Kurigram Correspondent adds: As floodwater began to recede, erosion along Dharala, Brahmanputra, Teesta and 13 other rivers took an alarming turn.

Kurigram-Jatrapur road at the south end of Dharala Bridge developed numerous cracks at different points, with approach roads at both ends of the bridge being the worst-affected. Big cracks developed there and the road is about to cave in.

UNB Jamalpur Correspondent adds: Flood situation in the district has marked slight improvement and the low-lying areas still remained under flood water.

The government allotted Tk 10 lakh and 600 tonnes of rice and other relief materials to distribute among marooned and displaced people on Wednesday.

UNB Gaibandha Correspondent adds: Deputy Commissioner`s Office informed that around 150,000 people were directly affected by flood in the district.

On Wednesday, Tk 14 lakh and 128 tonnes of rice were distributed in flood-affected areas in different upazilas.

Flood situation in Bogra improved remarkably in the last 24 hours.

The Department of Disaster Management and Relief said in a handout issued on Wednesday that a total of Tk 50 lakh and 2,900 tonnes of rice were allotted for flood-stricken people of Sylhet, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Jamalpur and Bogra.

A total of 810 medical teams have been formed to provide healthcare services to the flood-hit people in the five districts, it added.
