Boost export, cut trade deficit: Minister
US$ 28bn export target set for 2012-13
Dhaka, July 5 (UNB) - Commerce Minister GM Quader on Thursday urged the exporters to put in their best efforts to achieve the US$ 28,000 million (US$ 28 billion) export target in the fiscal 2012-13 to minimise the trade gap.
“Export target has been fixed at US$ 28,000 million. Exporters will have to work sincerely to achieve the target,” he said during a meeting at the Commerce Ministry.
The Commerce Minister assured the exporters of providing all sorts of supports to achieve the target. “It’s possible to achieve the target with the support of the exporters. We’ll have to minimise the trade deficit by boosting export,” GM Quader said.
He said the country earned US$ 24,418.27 million against the export target of US$ 26,500 million in the last fiscal (2011-2012). “Due to global economic crisis, the export earnings fell slightly below to the target.”
Of the 44 Bangladesh missions, 21 achieved the export target while the remaining missions failed to achieve the pre-set target, he added.
“There’s ample scope to increase export volume…we need to improve the product quality and create new export market,” he said.
Commerce Secretary M Ghulam Hossain, Additional Secretaries ATM Mortoza Reza Chowdhury, Monoj Kumar Roy and Komol Krishna Bhatyacharja and senior officials from the Foreign Ministry, Fisheries Ministry and representatives from the FBCCI, BGMEA and BKMEA were also present.
