News - Make WB letters public: BNP asks govt
Dhaka, July 6 (UNB) - BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday asked the government to make public the letters sent by the World Bank regarding the Padma Bridge project graft.

“People want to know about the contents of the letters and names of those involved in the corruption. Make the letters public soon,“ he told a discussion.

Swadhinata Forum, a pro-opposition platform, orgainsed the programme marking the 1st anniversary of police atrocities on opposition chief whip Zainul Abdin Farroque during hartal hours on July 6, 2011.

Addressing the discussion, Fakhrul said the government has lost its minimum sense of shame as they are trying to put the blame on the opposition for annulment of the Padma Bridge loan deal while the WB clearly stated that the government high-ups were involved in the graft of the dream project.

Criticising the government for its unguarded remarks against the WB following the cancellation of the deal, he said the way the government is bashing the WB seems to be a fight against the global lender.

The World Bank annulled a $1.2 billion credit for Padma Bridge project recently, saying it has "credible evidence" of a high-level corruption conspiracy among Bangladesh government officials.

The global lender said it had provided evidence of corruption from two investigations into the Padma bridge project to Bangladesh's prime minister and other senior government officials in an effort to press for action.

Terming the government politically bankrupt, the BNP leader said the government has become alienated from people for its misrule, repression and failure to run the country.

Referring to the recent reports of New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) on the worsening human rights situation in Bangladesh, he said the global rights bodies are now worried about human rights situation in the country and are asking to stop BDR mutiny trial.

About HRW’s suggestion to disband Rab, the BNP spokesman said the global rights bodies are crticising the elite force and advocating for dissolving it as the government using the force for political purpose.

Reiterating his party’s demand for restoration of the caretaker government system, Fakhrul said showing respect to people’s opinion the government needs to restore the system and continue the democratic practice.

Referring to the police attack on the opposition chief whip, Fakhrul said it was not only on Farroque but also on democracy.
On July 6 last year, Farroque was assaulted by the law enforcers as he and some other opposition MPs brought out a procession at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital in support of a hartal called by the BNP-led four-party alliance.
At one stage of altercation with him, police beat up Farroque and tried to drag him into their van, leaving him seriously injured.
Chaired by forum president Abu Naser M Rahmatullah, the programme was addressed, among others, by BNP vice-chairman Abdullah Al Noman, Zainul Abdin Farroque and other BNP MPs and leaders.
