Dhaka, July 7 (UNB) - Drivers of CNG-run auto-rickshaws will enforce an indefinite strike in the capital from July 11 if their 10-point demand is not met by July 10.
Dhaka Zilla Auto-rickshaw Sramik Union and Dhaka Auto-rickshaw Sramik Union jointly called the strike from a rally in front of the National Press Club on Saturday.
The demands include immediately distributing 5,000 CNG-run auto-rickshaws among valid driving licence holders as proposed by Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, conducting mobile court at garages to take punitive action against the auto-rickshaw owners who charge extra than the government-fixed rate, ending police harassment, awarding licences to experienced drivers on easy conditions and stopping retest while renewing driving licences, readjusting auto-rickshaw fares, creating parking space for auto-rickshaws at different places, keeping CNG-run auto-rickshaws out of the purview of toll and taking measures to check snatching of auto-rickshaws and killing of drivers.
Addressing on the occasion, leaders of the auto-rickshaw drivers said they would enforce the strike in the capital from July 11 if the government fails to meet their demands by July 10.
They alleged that auto-rickshaw owners are charging them Tk 800-850 per day against Tk 600 fixed by the government.
They have to pay the full charge although a three-wheeler sits idle until 4 pm for repair purpose, the leaders said.
They also accused police of harassing them in many ways.
