MANILA, Philippines, Jul 08 (AP/UNB) - The Philippine army says communist guerrillas have freed two employees of a gold mining company and the owner's son in the country's volatile south.
Regional army spokesman Maj. Eugene Osias says the three were released unharmed late Saturday after two days of captivity by the New People's Army rebels outside Rosario town in Agusan del Sur province. He says army troops suspended a manhunt to allow an official to safely negotiate the hostages' release.
The military says about 30 rebels attacked the VTO mining firm's office Thursday and seized the three.
Rebel spokesman Jorge Madlos says they suspected the mining firm had a stockpile of weapons. The rebels have asked mining companies not to keep lots of weapons that they say could be used by security men to harass villagers.
