News - Benapole port workers on strike for pay rise
Benapole, July 8 (UNB)- The workers of Benaple Land Port went on an indefinite strike on Sunday morning demanding implementation of the government-declared minimum wages for them.

Several thousand workers staged demonstration in the port area and held a protest rally to press home their demand.  Loading and unloading of goods at Benapole Land Port came to a halt due to the strike.

Benapole Port-handling Workers' Union President Jahangir Alam Lal said they will continue the strike until the demand is met by the port authorities.

Port workers observed the strike for four days with the same demand the last month. Later, they withdrew the strike on June 7 upon assurance from MP of Jessore-1 Sheikh Afiluddin to meet their demand.

As the workers were given wages at the previous rate for the month of June, they started the indefinite strike from today.

Additional riot police have been deployed at different points to avoid any untoward incident.
