News - BNP submits memo to DCs on various demands
Dhaka, July 8 (UNB) – Opposition BNP on Sunday submitted the copies of a memorandum to the deputy commissioners (DCs) across the country containing the party’s various demands, including holding the next general election under a non-party caretaker government.

As part of the party’s countrywide programme declared by the BNP Chairperson from its June 11 rally, the memorandum was submitted to the DCs also to protest widespread corruption, misrule, gas, water and power crises and the government’s failure to ease nagging traffic jam in cities.

In Dhaka, a delegation, led by Dhaka district unit BNP president Abdul Mannan and general secretary Amanullah Aman, submitted the memorandum to Dhaka DC M Mohibul Haq at his office around 11:30am.

The BNP delegation also demanded the DC trace the missing opposition leaders, including Ilias Ali and Chowdhury Alam.

Accepting the memorandum, the DC said he would put it forward to the government high-ups.

DC Mohibul also sought cooperation of the BNP leaders in maintaining the law and order situation.

BNP sources said the party also submitted the copies of the memorandum to the DCs of all the districts as part of the central programme.

On June 11, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia announced a countrywide series of demonstrations from June 17 and threatened to enforce hartal or blockade programme if their demands, particularly the restoration of the non-party government system, are not met.

Addressing a mammoth rally in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, Khaleda Zia announced demonstrations, memorandum submission and protest processions at district, division and upazila levels across the country on June 17, June 24, July 1, July 8 and July 15.

The BNP-led 18-party alliance organised the mass rally after its June-10 ultimatum to the government for the restoration of the caretaker government system went unheeded.
