Dhaka, July 8 (UNB) - The teachers of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) observed a two-hour work abstention for the second day on Sunday demanding resignation of the vice-chancellor and pro-VC of the institution.

The Buet teachers ceased working from 11 am to 1 pm as part of their programmes announced on July 3 to observe a two-hour work abstention every day until July 11 to press for their demand.

During the work abstention, about 200 teachers of the university staged a sit-in at the Buet Shaheed Minar from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm today, said a press release.

The agitating teachers will go for an indefinite full-scale work abstention from July 14 if the VC and pro-VC do not resign by July 13.

The Buet teachers have been staging demonstration to “protect the university from the corruption of the present VC and Pro-VC” for two years, said the release.

They postponed their agitation on May 5 following assurance of the Prime Minister of looking into the matter.

As there was no headway, the teachers on June 9 gave an ultimatum for resignation of the VC and Pro-VC by June 30.

As they did not step down within the deadline, the Buet teachers announced the fresh programmes on July 3.
