Man jailed for demanding dowry in Jessore

Benapole (Jessore), July 9 (UNB) – A court in Jessore on Sunday convicted a man and sentenced him to two years rigorous imprisonment for demanding dowry from his wife.

The convict was identified as Zakir Ali, son of Atiar Rahman of Gourinathpur village in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenidah district.

According to the prosecution, Zakir married Hazera Khatun, daughter of M Atiar Rahman of Ramkrisnapur village in Chowgachha upazila of Jessore on 15 March 2007. Zakir took Tk 25,000, along with 3 cows and gold ornaments and furniture as dowry from Hazera’s family.

But Zakir again started torturing her to bring Tk 50,000 more from her father. After beating her mercilessly he drove her out from his house on September 4, 2010.

Later, the victim filed a case against him on January 20, 2011.

After examining the records and witnesses Chief Judicial Magistrate Sheikh Mafijur Rahman handed down the verdict.
