News - Trade Centre at Purbachal soon: GM Kader
Dhaka, July 10 (UNB) – The government will build a Trade Centre in Dhaka to promote trade and commerce in the country, Commerce Minister GM Kader said on Tuesday.

The ministry has already booked 10 acres of land at the Purbachal site being developed on the outskirts of the city to build a trade centre with the aim of facilitating promotion of local products at national and international levels, said GM Kader.

The minister was addressing the inauguration of the eight-day 5th Asian International Trade Expo 2012, at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre.

The minister said the government will book 20 acres more at Purbachal site to make sure that the trade centre is a big one.

Pointing out the fact that most of the developed economies in the world have big trade centres to promote trade, he said the country lacks such major business hubs to meet the demand of the growing economy.

The boost in regional trade in Asia is quite remarkable in the age of globalisation, and the ‘Dhaka Trade Centre’ will be the first of its kind in the country, enabling our traders to reap the benefit, he added.

Although traders and manufacturers in the country have a huge opportunity to explore the market of neighbouring countries, it is not expanding due to mistrust prevailing between the countries, Kader said.

“Conventional and non-conventional products manufactured in the country have recently been enjoying a better access to the market of neighbouring countries, especially in India, due to the progress made under the SAFTA (South Asian Free Trade Area) pact,” he added.

The minister also hoped that the country’s export earning this fiscal will rise to US$ 25 billion.

Speaking at the inauguration, Aftabul Islam, president of American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Bangladesh, said the country has the opportunity to earn about US$ five billion by exporting goods to the neighbouring countries.

Progressive manufacturing by foreign investors should also be encouraged in the country to exploit the opportunity in Asian trade, he added.

Syed Ershad Ahmed, Foreign Investors’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), said Bangladesh always attracts foreign investors due to the availability of cheap labour.

The Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the country has already hit the billion dollar mark and it will continue to increase in the coming days, he said.

Organised by CEMS-Global USA, the expo will showcase various consumer products, including electronics, foods, beverages, beauty products and machineries, in a bid to enhance the performance and competitiveness of manufacturers in Asia, said CEMS president Meherun Islam.

Over 100 exhibitors from 10 countries will participate in the eight-day expo, according to the organisers.
