Dhaka, July 10 (UNB) – Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Tuesday stressed good relations between the taxpayers and tax collectors as the government’s key objective is to give a boost to revenue collection.
“We want to see that the taxpayers pay tax with enthusiasm…there should be good relations between the taxpayers and tax collectors…we always believe in views exchange,” he told a discussion in the city.
He said the government would not be able to provide services to people if the revenue collection remains below expectation.
“The government needs capacity (to provide services)…the amount what we’ll mobilizs as own resources in the current fiscal is 18.2 percent (of GDP) which will be 20 percent, at least in the near future,” Muhith said.
Citing an example of advanced tax collection system, the Finance Minister said there will be a positive change in tax payment system by 2015. “There’ll be a change in moral character of tax payment, too.”
Bangladesh National Board of Revenue (NBR) arranged the event marking the National VAT Day at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) with NBR member Jahanara Siddiqui in the chair.
Economic Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister Dr Moshiur Rahman and Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) President AK Azad spoke as special guests while NBR member (VAT Policy) M Farid Uddin presented the keynote paper at the discussion.
Speaking on the occasion, AK Azad said, “It was business community which helped Bangladesh have a respectful position. The businesspeople have been playing a significant role through paying VAT (value added tax) and tax over the last four years.”
The apex trade body President suggested the Finance Minister to arrange talks at district level with businesspeople before passing the new VAT law.
He also laid emphasis on minimising gap between the NBR and businesspeople to give a boost to revenue collection of the government.
Moshiur Rahman said he put in his best efforts to accommodate proposals from the both sides. “In some cases, we played conservative roles.”
He also said they gave attention to increasing the revenue earnings through VAT.
Later, the Finance Minister and Moshiur Rahman handed over certificates and crests among the top VAT payers at national and district levels.
A total of 125 individuals/organisations were awarded at district level while nine individuals and organisations awarded in national category for paying the highest amount of VAT in 2010-2011 fiscal year.
