News - Ministers making inconsistent remarks for face saving: Fakhrul
Dhaka, July 11 (UNB) – Hitting out at the ministers for their contradictory remarks on Padma Bridge project, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday said the government has got unnerved and bewildered following the annulment of Padma Bridge loan deal by the World Bank.

“The World Bank has scrapped the Padma Bridge loan agreement due to corruption by the government. Being puzzled by the WB decision, the ministers are now making inconsistent comments for face saving,” he said.

Fakhrul was talking to reporters after placing wreaths at the grave of party founder late president Ziaur Rahman with JCD and Swechchasebak Dal leaders, who have been released from jails recently.

Renewing his party’s demand for making the letters sent by the WB public, the BNP spokesman said if the government does not disclose the contents of the letters they will reveal the information they have obtained once BNP returns to power.

Earlier on Tuesday, Fakhrul claimed they have information that the World Bank has brought the graft charges against three specific persons --, the Prime Minister, the Finance Minister and former Communications Minister Abul Hossain.

Terming the PM’s plan to construct the Padma Bridge with domestic resources impractical, he said the experts have already gave opinions that it would not be possible to construct the bridge with own funds.

Sheikh Hasina has recently revealed in parliament her government’s plan for the construction of the mega project with own fund as the World Bank annulled a $1.2 billion credit for the Padma Bridge project, bringing allegations of corruption by the government high-ups.

According to the plan, the construction work on the bridge will start in the current fiscal year and complete within fiscal 2015-16 at a cost of Tk 23,000 crore.

Fakhrul said they will construct two mega bridges over the mighty Padma River with soft-term loan from the WB and donors.

Asked whether they will participate in Gazipur-4 by-polls, which fell vacant following the resignation of AL MP Shoel Taj from parliament, he said the party’s parliamentary committee will take decision in this regard after discussions.

BNP standing committee members MK Anwar, and Nazrul Islam Khan, senior BNP leaders Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Amanullah Aman and Barkatullah Bulu were, among others, present there.
