News - Pakistan: Gunmen attack police compound; 9 killed
ISLAMABAD, JULY 12 (AP/UNB) - Police say at least half a dozen gunmen have attacked a compound housing policemen in eastern Pakistan, killing nine of them.

Police official Habibur Rehman says the policemen who were attacked in the city of Lahore were training to become prison guards.

No group has claimed responsibility for Thursday's attack. But police suspect it was carried out by Islamist militants.

Rehman says the police who were attacked were recruited from northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and brought to Lahore for training.

Pakistan's northwest is the main sanctuary for Islamist militants in the country.
