Dhaka, July 12 (UNB) – BNP stalwart Moudud Ahmed on Thursday said it is the government not the World Bank that has deceived people over the Padma Bridge project.
“You (govt) not the WB have cheated the people of the country as the Bank scrapped the loan deal on specific graft allegations,” he told a discussion.
Moudud made the remarks apparently reacting to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s comment that the lending agency cheated the people of Bangladesh with alleged suspicion of corruption.
Addressing the inaugural session of the National Council 2012 of Awami Swechchhasebak League on Wednesday, she also alleged the World Bank cancelled its US$ 1.2 billion loan to Bangladesh for Padma Bridge although they did not release even a single taka.
Hasina also renewed her strong commitment to build the country’s biggest Padma Bridge with own fund.
Speaking at the discussion, Moudud asked the government to make public the letters sent by the global lender to them if the WB allegations are baseless. “Why are you not disclosing the contents of the letter, if you are not involved in the corruption?”
Padma Bridge Bastabayon Sangram Parishad, a pro-BNP platform, organised the discussion titled ‘Pervasive Corruption, Impediment to Padma Bridge Construction” at the National Press Club.
Terming the government’s plant to build the multipurpose bridge with own fund a figment of imagination, he said the ministers are telling this only to make people fool and hush up corruption in Padma Bridge project. “In fact, the government is suffering from indecision about the Padma Bridge construction.”
Suggesting the government to reach a negotiation with the WB to revive the scrapped deal, he said, “Don’t consider the WB your opposition party. Shun extremism and be practical. It is impossible to implement the mega project like Padma Bridge without foreign loan.”
Refuting the PM’s remarks how the corruption took place when no fund was released, Moudud said SNC-Lavalin had given the former communications minister Tk 287 crore for appointing the Canadian company as a consultant for the Padma Bridge project. “They gave the money in advance as investment to loot money from the project.”
