News - 23 Bangladesh missions fail to achieve July-May export targets
Dhaka, July 13 (UNB) – Twenty-three of the Bangladesh missions abroad could not achieve their respective export targets for the first 11 months (July-May) of the last fiscal year (2011-12).

The key missions like Washington, Ottawa, Berlin, The Hague, and Paris failed to achieve their export targets for the period, while some other important missions - London, Madrid, Tokyo and Beijing – have been able to achieve their target.

The overall export earnings for the 11 months of the last fiscal year was US$ 21,976.46 million, 7.52 percent down than the strategic target of $ 23,762.55 million.

The export earning during the 2010-11 fiscal totaled US$ 22,924.38 million, 23.92 percent up than the target of $ 18,500 million.

Of the 44 Bangladesh missions, 21 achieved their export targets for the July-May period of the last fiscal, according to Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) statistics.

The 21 well-performing missions are Amman, London, Katmandu, Tripoli, Tokyo, Beijing, Bangkok, Colombo, Kuwait, Muscat, Singapore, Madrid, Seoul, Brunei, Pretoria, Nairobi, Dubai, Thimpu, Kuala Lumpur, Moscow, and Yangon.

Of the 23 Bangladesh missions that could not achieve their 11-month targets, still exports for 13 of them marked a rise from the corresponding period of the 2010-11 fiscal. These missions are Berlin, Canberra, Brussels, Washington, New Delhi, Doha, Rome, Riyadh, Hong Kong, Ottawa, Manama, Tashkent and Stockholm.

However, 10 missions - The Hague, Hanoi, Paris, Rabat, Ankara, Manila, Islamabad, Tehran, Cairo and Jakarta- saw exports decline during the July-May period of the last fiscal compared to the corresponding period of the previous fiscal (2010-11).

The EPB figures revealed that out of the 16 Bangladesh missions having commercial wings, only eight achieved the export targets set for them while the rest eight others failed to do so.

The eight missions with commercial wings, which achieved the export targets, are in London, Madrid, Dubai, Beijing, Tokyo, Moscow, Kuala Lumpur, and Yangon.

Although the remaining eight commercial wings could not achieve the targets, the earnings of six except Tehran and Paris still saw a rise over the corresponding period of the 2010-11 fiscal. These are in Brussels, Canberra, Washington, Ottawa, New Delhi and Berlin.

The 21 Bangladesh missions that succeeded in achieving their targets for July-May of last fiscal accounted for $ 5316.07 million while the export earnings of the rest of 23 missions, which failed to achieve their targets, totaled $ 16082.46 million.

The highest earnings over the 11-month period, some $ 4910.73 million - almost one-fifth of total exports - were registered from the Washington mission, followed by the mission in Berlin, which accounted for $ 3545.41 million and London $ 2397.02 million.
The strong showing from EU member states continued with the Madrid mission fetching $ 1036.71 million.

The next is the Bangladesh mission in Italy, which earned almost $ 911.68 million, followed by the missions in Ottawa and The Hague, with approximately $ 901.50 million and $ 924.34 million respectively. The New Delhi mission managed to fetch $ 467.75 million.
