News - Atiur for more credit for productive sector
Sirajganj, July 14 (UNB) - Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman on Saturday urged the commercial banks to sanction more loans for the productive sector.

While exchanging views with women entrepreneurs here, the central bank boss also stressed distributing more credit among the small entrepreneurs.

Atiur met the entrepreneurs during his visit to Masumpur Jaripalli Women Cluster, financed by National Bank district branch.

The BB Governor said, “It’s not possible for the government alone to do all the development works. All, irrespective of party affiliation, should work together for the country’s overall development.”

Addressing a loan distribution function organised by Trust Bank at Shaheed M Munsur Ali Auditorium earlier in the day, Dr Atiur said development activities should be carried out with honesty to keep up Bangladesh’s march forward.

About loan default culture, he said the rich have a tendency of not paying back bank loans while the poor and mid-level businesspeople have good records of loan payment. “So, a decision has been taken to distribute Tk 59,000 crore loan in the SME sector this year. Of the amount, 24 percent has already been disbursed,” said Atiur.

On climate change, the BB boss said the developed countries should pay compensation to Bangladesh for environmental degradation.

BB Governor’s adviser Birupal, district Additional Deputy Commissioner Mokhlesur Rahman, among others, spoke at the programme held with General Manager of Trust Bank Shah Alam Sarwar in the chair.

UNB Rajshahi correspondent reports: Governor Atiur Rahman called upon the commercial banks to work for the development of agriculture in the Barind Region.

Addressing a views-exchange meeting with the farmers, organised by Poba upazila branch of National Bank, he said the role of the Barind Region in the country’s economy is very significant. “Hence, development of agriculture of this region should get special priority.”
