Dhaka, July 15 (UNB) – Law Minister Shafique Ahmed has said Additional District and Session Judges will get power along with the District Judges to conduct court (tribunal) for quick disposal of appeals related to vested property.
He was talking to journalists at his office on Sunday after a meeting with a delegation of Vested Property Return Act Bastobayon Nagorik Samannoy Cell.
President of Vested Property Return Law Prevention Movement Kamal Lohani led the delegation.
Representatives of NGOs Nijera Kori, Sammilito Samajik Andolon, ALRD and Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) included the delegation.
Shafique told the journalists that there has been massive response across the country following the passage of the Vested Property Return Act. “Some 3,000-4,000 applications have been submitted with courts in each district.”
It is not possible to dispose of those applications with the lone court (tribunal) in those districts. Hence, Additional District and Sessions Judges will be given power along with the District Judges for quick disposal of the applications, he said.
As per the law, there is a provision to appeal for returning vested property within 120 days from gazette publication of vested property list. There is also a provision to begin trial proceedings within 300 days of submission of applications for settling the disputes, said Shafique.
Referring to unnecessary delay in filling application, the delegation members requested the minister to extend the deadline for filing petition.
The Law Minister told the delegation that the Land Ministry can give directive in this regard as the matter is under its jurisdiction. “The Law Ministry only looks into the legal aspect.”
He called for strengthening publicity about return of vested property.
The Law Minister said letters will be issued from the ministry asking to hang banners or signboards in front of court at each district.
