News - Nahid to sit with Buet faculty deans, dept chairmen Monday
Dhaka, July 15 (UNB) – Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid will sit with the deans and chairmen of all faculties and departments of Buet tomorrow (Monday) to find out a solution to the ongoing deadlock at the university.

The meeting will be held at the Education Ministry at 12 pm, said the Education Minister while briefing journalists after a high-profile meeting on Sunday.

The meeting was attended by Chairman of University Grants Commission Dr AK Azad Chowdury, President of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education Ministry Rashed Khan Menon, MP, and Education Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury.

The Education Minister has also invited some former distinguished professors of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology to Monday’s meeting.

Replying to a question, he said any agitating teacher of Buet has not been invited to the meeting as they earlier announced not to meet anyone other than the President and the Prime Minister.

Meanwhile, around 200 teachers, students and employees of Buet, loyal to the VC, on Sunday demanded resumption of academic activities.

On the other hand, the agitating teachers, students and employees of Buet submitted a memorandum to President Zillur Rahman at Bangabhaban around noon, demanding removal of its vice-chancellor Prof SM Nazrul Islam and Pro-VC Prof Habibur Rahman.

They brought out a procession from the campus and started marching towards Bangabhaban, but police obstructed the students and only allowed the teachers to go to the presidential palace.

A group of seven teachers, including Buet teachers’ association president Prof Dr Mujibur Rahman and general secretary Ashraful Islam, submitted the memorandum to the President, also the Chancellor of the university.

Earlier, the teachers and students staged their sit-in programme on the campus for the 5th day on the trot today to press home their demand.

The Buet teachers’ association will also observe a two-hour token hunger strike before the administrative building at 11 am tomorrow, general secretary of Buet Teachers Association Prof Ashraful Islam told UNB.

He said they would continue their movement until the VC and his deputy are removed.

Earlier, in the morning, the Buet VC reiterated that they would not resign.

He, however, said he would accept any decision of the President for the sake of country.

On July 10, the Buet authorities closed the country’s premier technological university for 44 days after the teachers’ association threatened to start class boycott for an indefinite period if the VC and the Pro-VC were not removed by July 14.
