News - Nahid holding talks with Buet faculty deans, dept chairmen
Dhaka, July 16 (UNB) – Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid is now in talks with the deans and chairmen of all faculties and departments of Buet to discuss ways to resolve the ongoing deadlock at the university.

The meeting started at the Education Ministry at about 12 pm.

The Education Minister called the meeting after a high-profile meeting at his office on Sunday.

Sunday’s meeting was attended by Chairman of University Grants Commission Dr AK Azad Chowdury, President of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education Ministry Rashed Khan Menon, MP, and Education Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury.

The Education Minister has also invited some former distinguished professors of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology to Monday’s meeting.

Replying to a question, he said any agitating teacher of Buet has not been invited to the meeting as they earlier announced not to meet anyone other than the President and the Prime Minister.

Meanwhile, the agitating teachers, students and employees of Buet are observing a two-hour token hunger strike before the administrative building from 11 am today, demanding removal of vice-chancellor Prof SM Nazrul Islam and Pro-VC Prof Habibur Rahman of the university.

On July 10, the Buet authorities closed the country’s premier technological university for 44 days after the teachers’ association threatened to start class boycott for an indefinite period if the VC and the Pro-VC were not removed by July 14.
