
Dhaka, July 16 (UNB) - The Cabinet has decided to open two bank accounts, one for local currency and one for foreign currency, to receive voluntary contributions from the people for the construction of the Padma Bridge.
The decision was taken at the regular weekly meeting of the cabinet held at the Bangladesh Secretariat today (Monday) with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing newsmen after the meeting, Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said that the cabinet took the decision following the huge enthusiasm shown by the people of all strata to contribute voluntarily for the construction of the country’s dream bridge over the Padma River.
He said the cabinet has directed the Finance Ministry to formulate necessary guidelines for the management of the donated money to ensure transparency and accountability. After the preparation of the guidelines the Finance Minister will submit the same to the Prime Minister for final approval.
The cabinet secretary said the donations from expatriate Bangladeshis will be received through the Foreign Currency Account while local donations through the local currency account.
He said there will be arrangement of giving donations to the Prime Minister directly after the finalisation of the guidelines.
Bhuiyan said the cabinet members also announced to donate their one month’s salary for the construction of the Padma Bridge.
He said the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction over the huge response of the people of all professions and class for the construction of the Mega Bridge.
The cabinet also directed the Ministry of Religious Affairs to submit a draft of the Waqf Estate (Handover and Development) Special Provision Bill, 2012 giving some specific directives to make it more time befitting.
A report on the participation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the
9th US-Islamic International Forum held in Doha on May 29-30 was placed before the cabinet.
The cabinet meeting was informed about the participation of Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni at the 37th Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group held in London on April 16, and at the 11th Shangrila Dialogue in Singapore on 01-03June this year.
Cabinet members, advisers to the Prime Minister and State Ministers concerned attended the meeting while secretaries concerned were present.
