Dhaka, July 16 (UNB) – The national standing committee of BNP, the party's highest policymaking body, sits tonight in an emergency meeting to discuss various issues, including the latest political situation, and work out the next course of action.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia convened the meeting at her Gulshan office.
The meeting is scheduled to start at 9:30pm with Khaleda Zia in the chair, party sources said.
Earlier, on June 11, Khaleda Zia from a rally in the capital announced a countrywide series of demonstrations from June 17 to July 15 that ended Sunday. But the month-long agitation programme apparently failed to force the government to meet the opposition’s various demands, including restoration of the caretaker government system.
Meanwhile, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday said they will strengthen the party during Ramadan and launch a vigorous movement after Eid to unseat the government and restore the caretaker government system.
Party insiders said the standing committee will evaluate the outcomes of the month-long agitation and will chalk out the action programmes to be launched after Eid.
Meanwhile, Austrian High Commissioner in Dhaka Dr Ferdinand Maultaschl is scheduled to meet the BNP chairperson at her Gulshan office at 8.30pm.
