News - Solution to Buet standoff after talks with President, PM: Nahid
Dhaka, July 16 (UNB) – After a meeting with deans and chairmen of all faculties and departments of Buet, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Monday said a decision will be taken after consultation with the President and the Prime Minister to resolve the ongoing crisis at the university.

“We’ve heard their opinions and now we’ll take a decision after consultation with the President and the Prime Minister,” he told reporters after the meeting at the Education Ministry.

The Education Minister also invited some former distinguished professors of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) to today’s meeting who also gave their opinions for the removal of the incumbent VC and Pro-VC, official sources said.

The Education Minister called the meeting after a high-profile meeting at his office on Sunday.

Sunday’s meeting was attended by Chairman of the University Grants Commission Dr AK Azad Chowdury, President of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education Ministry Rashed Khan Menon, MP, and Education Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury.

Meanwhile, the agitating teachers, students and employees of Buet are observing a two-hour token hunger strike before Buet’s administrative building from 11 am today, demanding removal of vice-chancellor Prof SM Nazrul Islam and Pro-VC Prof Habibur Rahman of the university.

On July 10, the Buet authorities closed the country’s premier technological university for 44 days after the teachers’ association threatened to boycott classes for an indefinite period if the VC and the Pro-VC were not removed by July 14.
