Dhaka, July 16 (UNB) – Prime Minister’s Advisor Dr. Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdury on Monday said that load-shedding will be halved during the holy month of Ramadan.

``The duration of power outage everyday during Ramadan will be half an hour instead of one hour at present`` he stated.

He affirmed that the government will make all-out efforts to ensure highest-ever power generation during Ramadan, the holy month of fasting.

The Advisor’s assurance came when he was talking to reporters after an agreement signing programme in Bijoy Hall of Power Development Board (PDB) in the capital. Rural Electrification Board (REB)’s three subsidiaries signed the agreement with mobile phone operators so that power consumers can pay their bills through SMS.

Tawfiq Ehahi said that power generation will be increased by 600 megawatt (MW) during Ramadan from the present level of generation. He urged the people to maintain austerity in consuming power so that consumers from all levels can share electricity.

The Advisor also held a wide-ranging meeting with the top officers of all power generating, transmitting and distributing entities at Bijoy Hall to develop strategy to manage properly the power supply in the capital and elsewhere in the country.

The officials of different entities informed him that the power supply situation has improved substantially at present and power generators they are capable to generate more than 6000 MW against a demand of 6,500 MW.

The PM’s Advisor directed the officials to work hard to avoid load shedding at Sehri, Iftar and Tarabi prayers times so that Musallis (devotees) do not suffer during the month of fasting.

He laid emphasis on maintaining demand side management (DSM) in order to keep the demand of power at around 6,500 MW through taking different measures.

He asked different entities to strictly follow the instruction about load shedding and DMS and remain alert so that technical fault is avoided in generating and distributing power.

Power Secretary Abul Kalam Azad, PDB Chairman ASM Alamgir Kabir and other top officials of Power Ministry were present at the meeting.
