News - WB cancelled loan deal because of particular person: PM
Dhaka, July 16 (UNB) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday said she had heard that the World Bank would cancel its loan agreement for the Padma Bridge project because of a particular person.

“I heard the WB will cancel the loan agreement because of a particular person … managing director of a particular bank,” she said without mentioning anybody’s name.

The Prime Minister was addressing a meeting of the central working committee of Awami League at Ganobhaban.

Reaffirming her government’s plan, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the government will start the construction work on Padma Bridge after working out a design.

“We’ve liberated the country through a war…can’t we build a bridge? We’ll put in our physical labour, if necessary. We don’t want a war or quarrel with any one,” she said.

Referring to the World Bank, the Prime Minister said, “It’s a big power, but we’ve our self-confidence. As we didn’t commit anything wrong, why should we bow down? If any one does something using our name, we won’t spare them.”

Hasina said the government can spend Tk 1 billion from the foreign currency reserve.
