News - Buet teachers threaten to resign en masse
Dhaka, July 16 (UNB) - The agitating teachers of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) on Monday night threatened to resign en masse on July 22 if their demand for the removal of the VC and pro-VC is not met by the time.

Prof Dr Ataur Rahman, treasurer of Buet teachers’ association, came up with their decision at a press briefing at the university.

Until then, he said, the teachers, students, officers and employees of Buet will stage sit-in before the Vice-Chancellor office from 11 am to 1 pm every day.

Prof Ataur said about 250 teachers of Buet will resign if Vice Chancellor Prof SM Nazrul Islam and Pro-VC Prof Habibur Rahman do not resign.

Earlier in the day, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid met had a meeting with the deans and chairmen of all faculties and departments of Buet.

“We’ve heard their opinions and now we’ll take a decision after consultation with the President and the Prime Minister,” he told reporters after the meeting at the Education Ministry. The Education Minister also invited some former distinguished professors of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) to today’s meeting who also gave their opinions for the removal of the incumbent VC and Pro-VC, official sources said. The Education Minister called the meeting after a high-profile meeting at his office on Sunday. Sunday’s meeting was attended by Chairman of the University Grants Commission Dr AK Azad Chowdury, President of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education Ministry Rashed Khan Menon, MP, and Education Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury. Meanwhile, the agitating teachers, students and employees of Buet are observing a two-hour token hunger strike before Buet’s administrative building from 11 am today, demanding removal VC and Pro-VC of the university. On July 10, the Buet authorities closed the country’s premier technological university for 44 days after the teachers’ association threatened to boycott classes for an indefinite period if the VC and the Pro-VC were not removed by July 14.
